What is bioinformatics ?

"Ask anyone in the rarified world of bioinformatics about job prospects these days and you’ll hear the same thing: this field is hot. Many bioinformatics leaders who spoke with Science said that they had gone through graduate school twice - once for biology and a second time for computer science. Few set out deliberately on this arduous path. But those who followed it are now being rewarded."

Since 1998, Bioinformatics has been taught at La Trobe University as a double degree course: VCE graduates enrol into the four-year Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Technology(Bioinformatics) program and study majors in at least two of Molecular Biology (Biochemistry and Genetics), Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science. After completing the course, students might directly enter the work-force, or continue on to Postgraduate Research at the University.

So what is Bioinformatics all about? Some students will take up careers based on DNA sequence analysis, others might get into protein structure and molecular modelling. There are other areas too. All of the skills necessary for each of these areas of research and development will be presented in the double degree program.
